In this video, Dr Kyl (they/she) shares three evidence-based reasons why prepubescent children’s athletic activities should not be separated by binary boy-girl gender.
Reason #1 [2:02] explains how there are no significant physical differences in height, weight, strength, endurance or testosterone levels between male, female or intersex children before puberty.
Reason #2 [3:43] describes how children are exposed to sexist stereotypes and gender socialisation that perpetuate the bias that boys are more athletic than girls which can contribute to diversions in athletic abilities.
Reason #3 [6:01] states that many children have gender identities that do not fit into binary boy-girl categories.
